where to start?

A few people at uni have and love the Exped Venus II , above is the comparison of the original vs light versions according to the Exped website. Personally I think I'm looking for something a bit lighter.
Buying a tent is something I have put off for almost three years now because I didn't feel as though I was educated enough to buy the right product for me.
I posted below on a facebook page titled "Bendigo Outdoor Freelance Forum (BOFF)" to see what sort of advice people had so I could make a start.

such conflicting advice!

Left , is the advice taken from my original tent question on the BOFF facebook page. The following is a list of tents, brands and advice given that came up in conversation.
